Easy DIY Sharpie Art Ideas! • The Budget Decorator

Date:

If you don’t think you have the right supplies around the house for a quick DIY project, think again.  Sharpie markers are in every junk drawer, home office, or school supply bag these days, and it’s amazing what these little markers can pull off in the DIY world, my friends… Sharpie art is a thing! No longer is the permanentness (is that a word?) of a sharpie a thing to be feared, because it is just that attribute that makes them perfect for home projects! And if you haven’t been to the office supply section in awhile, they come in a rainbow of colors, too. I prefer the more graphic black and white projects myself, but color or not, these sharpie art ideas are fast, easy and cheap! So check out the awesomeness of these bloggers and their craft projects for using sharpies to DIY… oh, just about anything.

Easy Sharpie Art Ideas

Planter Sharpie Craft

Pretty perfect planters, that’s all we can say. These sharpie crafts from ‘Homey Oh My’ are about as easy as they get. They took simple terra cotta pots from the craft store or nursery and painted them white. Then they used sharpie paint pens to create simple geometric designs. Boho chic style, with hardly any effort. We love the cactus they planted in theirs. Do you prefer succulents, or herbs?

Sharpie Art Gift Wrap Idea

From ‘Minieco’, use white sharpies to create patterned gift wrap that is personal and pretty. Use recycled brown paper to make this a sustainable craft idea as well.

Canvas Art Ideas

‘Twelve on Main’ used cotton canvas drop cloths to create these throw pillows, then created stencils to make the word art. You could choose any word that is meaningful to you, and she has a full tutorial on how to design your own stencils. Then it’s just a matter of coloring them with permanent markers, and done!

Sharpie Word Art

I like these DIY scripted sharpie art pillows by ‘Subtle Revelry‘… This could be quite romantic, and using small script makes them, well… subtle! I would use a straight edge and make sure I put a piece of cardboard inside the pillow case while I drew.

Sharpie Wall Art

Sharpie Shiplap Wall

If you are a lover of shiplap (who isn’t?) then you probably have longed for a way to add that charm to pretty much every room in your home. But, it’s a big commitment nailing sheets of shiplap to the walls of your home, right? Try a sharpie shiplap wall! From ‘Must Have Mom’, this sharpie art is something you can do in any room, and it’s super easy. Use it to add faux shiplap to your bathroom like they did here, or perhaps a boring hallway, bedroom or pass through space!

Wallpaper

From Mandi at ‘Vintage Revivals’ (former BHG blogger of the year!) this DIY sharpie wallpaper is really an amazing way to create what you need out of just about nothing. This looks on trend and smart, and all it took was some calculations and a straight edge. She did this whole room for about $8!

Accent Wall

Here is another tutorial for a Sharpie accent wall from ‘My DIY Happy Home’. They gave this boring bathroom wall the look of chevron tile with a fresh coat of paint and a simple Sharpie marker! Lots of step by step photos showing you exactly how to measure, mark and draw this wall

Sharpie Art for the Wall

Once again, ‘Vintage Revivals’ has a sharpie art idea for us that is so, so easy! This project only took a 4×4 piece of wood and a sharpie paint pen. You can pre-paint the wood, or create art directly onto the natural surface. She recommends using the extra wide tip to get the most impactful art. And yep, this is just drawing circles, my friends! Large wall art for just a few dollars, and it looks like you bought it at an expensive art show.

Sharpie Art Plate Craft

From ‘East Coast Creative‘, this Anthropologie inspired DIY sharpie art was done using dollar store plates and a projector…just for the record, the inspiration piece for this knock off sold for $7500… yes, those zeros belong there…

A Sharpie Wall

This last one is inspirational from Land of Nod… a pack of colored sharpies, and a little bit of reminiscing back to grade school, could make for one fun afternoon and one VERY cool home decorating project. This is the type of coolness that takes a home from ehh to bravely amazing… Happy sharpie art(ing)!

Sharpie Tips & Where To Buy (Links)

My one tip? Don’t cheap out (you don’t need to with this project!) and buy dollar store markers. They tend to be old and dried up, which will not give you a nice crisp line. Always check to make sure your marker has good ink on some scrap paper before diving in. Make an oops? Rubbing alcohol will take sharpie off of most surfaces!

What Type of Marker Should I Use

Use the Sharpie oil based paint markers whenever you want to create sharpie art on non porous surfaces like glass, ceramic, plastic or metal. They were made specifically to bond to these items, so your art and crafts will last! And, they come in tons of colors too. For fabric, use regular Sharpies or you can try the special Sharpie fabric markers. Choose the appropriate tip for the type of project that you will be working on!

  • Coconut oil
